Zhangjiajie is the place most foreign travelers mean when they say "the Avatar mountains." The towering quartzite sandstone pillars in Wulingyuan inspired the floating peaks of Pandora, and in 2026 the area is easier than ever to visit — but it is also easy to get wrong, because Zhangjiajie is not one park: it is several separate scenic areas spread across a city, a town, and a mountain, each with its own ticket, entrance and transport.
This guide explains how to plan two to three days here without wasting one of them queueing for the wrong bus.
What Zhangjiajie actually is
There are three main attractions, and they are not connected:
- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park / Wulingyuan Scenic Area — the UNESCO site with the pillar forests (Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream, Bailong Elevator). This is the Avatar scenery. Most people spend two days here.
- Tianmen Mountain — the mountain above Zhangjiajie city with the 7.5 km cable car, the 999-step Stairway to Heaven, the glass skywalk and the natural arch of Heaven's Gate. One day, or half a day if you rush.
- Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge — the famous glass-bottomed bridge, about 40 minutes from Wulingyuan. Half a day.
Spreading these over three days is comfortable. In two days you must choose, and the honest answer is: the National Forest Park first, Tianmen Mountain second.
Getting to Zhangjiajie
By air
Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) has direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an and Kunming, plus seasonal international routes. The airport is 5 km from the city centre — about 15 minutes by taxi or DiDi.
By high-speed rail
The high-speed rail station (Zhangjiajie West) connects to Changsha in roughly 2.5 hours, and onward to Guiyang, Chongqing and beyond. If you are arriving from Changsha, this is usually the easiest route. Book on the official 12306 app or website up to 15 days ahead; your passport is your ticket, so scan it at the gate and skip the paper queue.
From the station or airport to Wulingyuan
Wulingyuan (the town at the park's main gate) is about 35–40 km from Zhangjiajie city and 45 minutes by road. Buses run from the city bus station, and taxis or DiDi cost roughly ¥100–150. Many hotels can arrange a pickup if you ask in advance.
Where to stay: Wulingyuan or the city?
This is the single most important decision in your itinerary.
- Wulingyuan — stay here for the National Forest Park. You walk or take a two-minute bus to the gate, which means you can enter early, before the tour groups. Choose a hotel near the Wulingyuan gate or along the main street.
- Zhangjiajie city — stay here for Tianmen Mountain, the airport and the train station. Convenient for arrival and departure nights.
The common pattern: arrive, sleep in the city, do Tianmen Mountain on day one, move to Wulingyuan for days two and three at the park.
Inside the National Forest Park
One ticket covers the whole Wulingyuan Scenic Area, including the free shuttle buses that connect the viewpoints — and those buses are essential. The park is enormous, and walking between areas is not realistic for most visitors.
Yuanjiajie (the Avatar area)
This is where the Hallelujah Mountain pillar stands, with the famous "Avatar" viewpoint and the First Bridge Under Heaven. Take the Bailong Elevator (326 m, built into a cliff face) to reach the top quickly, then explore the circular cliff-edge walkways. The views over the pillar forest are the ones you came for.
Tianzi Mountain
The highest and most panoramic viewpoint in the park, with the sandstone peaks rising like a sea of stone. Come early — by mid-morning the viewpoints fill up, and clouds burn off by late morning in summer.
Golden Whip Stream
A flat, shaded 7.5 km walking route along a stream at the bottom of the valley, beneath the pillars. It is the easiest hike in the park and a good counterpoint to the cable cars and elevators. Monkeys live along the trail: keep food inside your bag.
Ten-Mile Gallery
A small scenic train through a valley of oddly shaped peaks, worth an hour if you have time rather than a priority.
Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain rises directly above Zhangjiajie city and is a separate ticket from the national park.
- The cable car — one of the longest passenger cableways in the world, running 7.5 km from the city up to the summit.
- The glass skywalk — a cliff-hugging walkway with a glass floor, along the west line of the summit.
- Heaven's Gate — the natural arch you have seen in photographs, reached by cable car, escalators and the 999-step Stairway to Heaven.
Book tickets in advance through the official channels or your hotel; slots are timed and weekends sell out. Wear or rent shoe covers if you plan to walk the glass sections.
The Grand Canyon glass bridge
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is a separate attraction about 40 minutes from Wulingyuan. It is a 430 m glass-bottomed bridge spanning a canyon, and entry is by timed ticket with a daily visitor cap. There is also a zip line and a canyon walk on site. Book online in advance — turning up on the day often fails in high season.
Tickets, passports and payments
- Tickets are bought with your passport; carry it every day, not a photocopy.
- The National Forest Park ticket is valid for multiple days (check the current validity when you buy), which is why the park is usually split across two days.
- Buy tickets through official mini-programs or hotel desks rather than unofficial touts at the gates.
- Payments: WeChat Pay and Alipay both work for foreign cards in most places. Set them up before you arrive, and keep a few hundred yuan in cash for small stalls and buses.
Best time to visit
- April to June — green, misty, dramatic; rain is common but the clouds between the pillars are the best photographs.
- September to November — the clearest skies and the most comfortable walking weather. This is the best all-round window.
- July to August — hot, humid, crowded with domestic holiday travel.
- December to February — cold, occasionally snowy, and beautiful with far fewer people; some higher paths can ice up.
Avoid Chinese public holidays (Golden Week in early October and Lunar New Year) if you can: the park's shuttle buses and elevators become a queueing exercise.
A practical 3-day itinerary
- Day 1 — Tianmen Mountain. Arrive in the city, take the cable car up, walk the glass skywalk and Heaven's Gate, then transfer to Wulingyuan in the evening.
- Day 2 — Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. Enter the park at opening, take the Bailong Elevator up, walk the Avatar viewpoints, then continue to Tianzi Mountain for the panorama. Return by cable car or bus.
- Day 3 — Golden Whip Stream and departure. Walk the stream trail in the morning, then head back to the city or the station. If you have a late departure, add the Grand Canyon glass bridge on the way.
Budget guide
- Budget hotel in Wulingyuan or the city: ¥200–400 per night.
- Mid-range hotel: ¥400–800.
- Park ticket plus elevator and cable cars: roughly ¥400–500 per person across the park.
- Tianmen Mountain ticket and cable car: roughly ¥280.
- Meals: ¥30–80 per person for local restaurants.
- Transport between the city and Wulingyuan: ¥30–150 depending on bus or DiDi.
Practical tips that save time
- Start early. Gates open around 7:00 and the first two hours are the quietest of the day.
- Wear real walking shoes. You will cover 8–15 km a day on stone steps, and the steps are steep.
- Bring rain gear, not just an umbrella — mountain weather changes within an hour.
- Download offline maps and a translation app; English signage exists at major viewpoints but not everywhere.
- Keep luggage light: porters and cable cars have weight and size limits.
- Buy an eSIM or local data plan before arrival so you can show tickets and use DiDi.
Zhangjiajie rewards planning more than most Chinese destinations, simply because it is three attractions wearing one name. Decide where you sleep, buy your tickets for the right day, start early, and the parks feel far less crowded than the internet suggests.
