Chengdu is China's capital of easy living: pandas, teahouses, tongue-numbing Sichuan food and a slow rhythm locals defend with pride. It is also the rail-and-air gateway to Tibet and Jiuzhaigou, and its new panda base is the most reliable place on earth to see the bears.
Top sights
- Chengdu Panda Base — Go at 8:00–10:00am feeding time when pandas are active; the base is 40 minutes from downtown.
- People's Park — Tea-house culture in action: bamboo chairs, ear-cleaning masters and matchmaker corner — free theatre all day.
- Kuanzhai Alleys — Restored Qing lanes of teahouses, snack shops and courtyard restaurants — touristy but well done.
- Jinli Street — Lantern-lit night street beside Wuhou Shrine; best after dark for food-stall grazing.
- Leshan Giant Buddha — The 71-metre cliff Buddha is a 1-hour fast train away — combine with a river-viewing boat.

Good to know
- Mild does not mean mild: ask for 'wei la' (微辣) heat level and keep soy milk handy — it cuts the pepper oil.
- Panda tickets are timed; reserve the earliest slot online the night before.
- Dupa hotpot is famous with locals — expect queues; join them, they are worth it.
