Guangzhou is Cantonese culture's capital — dim sum invented here, 2,200 years of trading-port history on the Pearl River, and the food city of southern China. Fast rail threads it to Hong Kong in under an hour and Shenzhen in 40 minutes.
Top sights
- Canton Tower — The 600-metre tower with a bubble tram around its waist — sunset ride, night views over the Pearl River.
- Shamian Island — Quiet colonial riverbank of banyan trees and 19th-century trading houses — the morning-walk classic.
- Chen Clan Ancestral Hall — The peak of Cantonese craft — carved screens, ceramic friezes and ancestor halls, an hour well spent.
- Dim sum in Liwan — Morning tea (yum cha) at Guangzhou Restaurant or Lin Heung — trolleys, bamboo steamers, loud aunties, the real thing.
- Sacred Heart Cathedral — Twin-spired granite Gothic cathedral downtown, free entry, photogenic interior.

Good to know
- Dim sum hours: best trolley action 8–10:30am — go with the locals, not the brunch crowd.
- Autumn (Oct–Dec) is the sweet spot: dry, mild air after the humid summer.
- Cash is almost unnecessary — but foreign cards work in chains and malls, less so in old-quarter eateries.
