Suzhou is the garden city of the Yangtze delta — UNESCO-listed scholar gardens of lattice windows and moon gates, silk heritage, and canal lanes older than the Ming. Twenty-eight minutes by fast rail from Shanghai, it rewards a full day or a slow overnight.
Top sights
- Humble Administrator's Garden — The largest and most famous classical garden — book the first slot; half a day with the attached museum.
- Lingering Garden — The connoisseur's choice: courtyard after courtyard of borrowed scenery and lattice framing.
- Tiger Hill — The leaning pagoda over a 2,500-year-old king's tomb with the famous sword pond.
- Pingjiang Road — Canal-side lane of stone bridges, teahouses and bookshops — Suzhou's most walkable two kilometres.
- Tongli water town — The best-preserved delta water town, 40 minutes by bus — canals, Tuisi Garden and quiet mornings.
