Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is the granite peak-and-pine landscape painted on every Chinese screen. Sea-of-clouds sunrises, hot-spring foothills and Ming villages at its base (Hongcun and Xidi) make it the country's classic two-day mountain trip, 2.5 hours by fast rail from Shanghai.
Top sights
- Beginning-to-Believe Peak area — The densest concentration of signature pine-and-ridge views near the Yungu cable car top.
- Bright Summit (Guangming Ding) — Central high point where sunrise crowds gather — 20 minutes' walk from the summit hotels.
- West Sea Grand Canyon — The spectacular loop trail through inner peaks; open roughly April–November, half a day with the funicular back up.
- Hongcun village — UNESCO Ming water-village at the mountain's foot — the pond-and-bridge view from every art student's canvas.
- Xidi village — Quieter partner village with gate-towers and carved lintels — combine with Hongcun on one ticket.

- Rain is not a write-off: mist between peaks is the signature look — check the forecast for sunrise odds, not clear skies.
