Qingdao travel guide
Where European elegance meets seaside chill — with a cold beer in hand
Plan your visit
Recommended stay2–3 days
Getting there2–3 hours by flight from Beijing, Shanghai or Xi'an to Qingdao Jiaodong airport.
Good to knowThe old town and Beer Museum suit a walking day; Laoshan Mountain takes half a day.
Qingdao is China's most livable seaside city — German colonial architecture, a famous beer born here in 1903, and a curving waterfront of beaches and headlands. It is the ideal relaxed stop between Beijing and Shanghai, with fast rail to both.
Top sights
- Zhanqiao Pier — The 1892 landmark pier with its pavilion at the end — the postcard view and morning fishing spot.
- Badaguan — Eight Great Passes: a leafy villa quarter where every street is planted with a different flowering tree.
- Tsingtao Beer Museum — The original 1903 brewery — exhibits, history and fresh unpasteurized beer served on the spot.
- Laoshan — Taoist mountain temples above the Yellow Sea, 1 hour east; combine coastal road and cable car.
- Olympic Sailing Center — 2008 Games marina turned waterfront promenade — best at sunset with the skyline behind.

Good to know
- Drink the locals' way: buy fresh beer in a plastic bag from street kiosks — it is unpasteurized and drunk same day.
- August brings the International Beer Festival (crowds and peak prices); June and September are calmer with warm water.
- Seafood stalls: agree on price per 500g before anything is cooked.
