Shenzhen travel guide
From fishing village to future city in one generation
Plan your visit
Recommended stay2–3 days
Getting there15–30 minutes by high-speed rail from Guangzhou or Hong Kong; Bao'an airport serves long-haul flights.
Good to knowWindow of the World and Happy Valley each need a full day.
Shenzhen is the city that went from fishing villages to 17 million in forty years — the world's hardware capital, a theme-park belt, and surprisingly good beaches and hiking for a megacity. It is the rail bridge to Hong Kong and the place to understand what 'China speed' means.
Top sights
- Shenzhen Talent Park / Shenzhen Bay — Bayside promenade with skyline towers across the water — the city's best sunset run or e-bike cruise.
- OCT Loft — Converted factory district of bookstores, design shops, indie cafes and weekend creative markets.
- Dafen Oil Painting Village — The village that once painted the world's replicas — now studios, galleries and portrait stalls.
- Wutong Mountain — The city's highest hike through subtropical forest to a cloud-level view over the bay and HK border hills.
- Windows of the World / Happy Valley — The classic theme-park belt for families — mini landmarks and coaster nights.
Suggested itinerary

- Xichong beach is 90 min out but the city's cleanest surf — Dameisha is the easy metro-to-sand fallback.
