108 jewel-toned lakes and the myth they call autumn
Plan your visit
Recommended stay3–4 days
Getting thereAbout 1.5 hours by flight to Jiuzhai Huanglong airport from Chengdu, or 6–8 hours by train.
Good to knowElevation runs 2,000–3,000 m — pace yourself; shuttle buses move between valleys.
Jiuzhaigou is a national park of turquoise lakes, multi-level waterfalls and Tibetan villages at 2,500 metres in Sichuan's Min mountains. Closed-buffered bus loops make the Y-shaped valley easy to cover; autumn colours in late October are the park's famous peak.
Top sights
- Five-Flower Lake — The park's poster image — a shallow lake whose mineral water shifts from emerald to sapphire in one frame.
- Nuorilang Waterfall — The broad travertine curtain at the fork of the Y — widest in the park, 20 minutes from the transit hub.
- Long Lake — The highest large lake, ringed by peaks and glacier-fed — calmest in the late morning light.
- Pearl Shoal Waterfall — Water sheets across a calcified slope before dropping — the boardwalk over the shoal is a highlight.
- Zharu Valley — The quieter Tibetan-Buddhist side valley, by permit only — the way to see the park without crowds.
