Pingyao travel guide
China's Wall Street frozen in Ming Dynasty stone
Plan your visit
Recommended stay1–2 days
Getting thereAbout 1.5 hours by train from Taiyuan, or connect via Taiyuan from Beijing.
Good to knowThe old town is walkable; climb the wall for sunset.
Pingyao is China's most complete walled Ming city — bank-fortress courtyards of the Qing 'Wall Street', towers over tiled rooftreets, and lantern-lit evenings inside intact ramparts. Small enough to walk end to end, it is the overnight stop between Xi'an and Beijing.
Top sights
- Ancient city wall — Walk the full 6km battlement circuit at dawn or dusk — the rooftop sea is Pingyao's defining view.
- Rishengchang Draft Bank — The birthplace of Chinese banking (1823) — courtyard halls, abacuses and silver-vault lore.
- Ming-Qing Street — The lantern-strung main drag of wine shops, lacquerware stores and courtyard inn front desks.
- Temple of the City God & Confucian Temple — Two working old temples with theatrical stages and scholar gardens — quiet afternoons.
- Shuanglin Temple — 15 minutes out: 2,000 painted Ming clay statues — some of the finest sculpture in China, nearly tourist-free.
