Xi'an travel guide
Where the Silk Road begins and China's story comes alive
Plan your visit
Recommended stay2–3 days
Getting thereAbout 4.5 hours by high-speed rail from Beijing; Xi'an North is the main hub.
Good to knowGive the Terracotta Army and the city wall separate days; the Muslim Quarter is busiest at night.
Xi'an is where Chinese civilization gets dense: the Terracotta Warriors guard the tomb of China's first emperor, the Ming city wall still encircles the Muslim Quarter, and the Silk Road began outside its western gate. Two thousand years of history sit within a compact, walkable core.
Top sights
- Terracotta Army — The 8,000-warrior pit complex is 40 km east — pair Pit 1's massed ranks with the on-site bronze chariot hall.
- Ancient City Wall — Rent a bike and ride the full 14 km circuit on top of the wall — the best hour in Xi'an, especially at dusk.
- Muslim Quarter — Beiyuanmen Street's lamb skewers, roujiamo and persimmon cakes — the liveliest food street in the northwest.
- Big Wild Goose Pagoda — Tang-dynasty pagoda in a temple-and-fountain square with a nightly music-water show.
- Shaanxi History Museum — Free (reserve ahead) and one of China's best museums — the Tang gold and Han figurines are unmissable.

- Guides at the Warrior pits: use the official ¥150–200 option or the audio guide rather than gate touts.
